Application Process

HOW TO ENROLL

Enrolling at Great Lakes Boat Building School is easy.  Just follow these simple steps and you’ll be on your way to building boats in no time…

  • Complete the “Student Application Form” online or click here to download a pdf version.
  • Have a copy of your High School diploma, GED certificate or College diploma OR a copy of your transcripts emailed or mailed to GLBBS directly from the institution in a sealed envelope.
  • Provide at least one Letter of Reference. These must be mailed directly from the referent to the school in a sealed envelope or completed online via the GLBBS Application System.
  • Return the signed Financial Responsibility form or complete it online.
  • Pay your $100 (U.S.), non-refundable application fee.  Prospective students may pay by check, cash (in person), or debit/credit card (over the phone).  Additionally, students who submit their application electronically will have the opportunity to complete their secure transaction online.

If you are a military veteran and will be using your VA Educational Benefits, please provide a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility to the Director of Student Services.

All application documents and letters of reference should be mailed or delivered to the attention of the Director of Student Services at GLBBS.

REQUIREMENTS/ELIGIBILITY

For enrollment, all prospective students must demonstrate the following:

  • The ability to understand written and oral instruction given in the English language
  • The physical capacity to undertake the day-to-day demands of a working boat yard
  • That a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalency has been achieved prior to the first day of class

Admission/Enrollment in GLBBS programs does not require prior woodworking experience, nor must a student have prior boat building knowledge.  Students must complete each quarter in sequence in order to progress to the following quarter.

INTERVIEW

Following receipt of the complete application documents noted above, the applicant will be contacted to arrange an interview. Ideally, this will take place in person at the school, but if this is not feasible, then a telephone or Skype interview will take place. This interview will be held with a member of the Admissions Committee and the Director of Student Services. If this is done in person, the student is encouraged to bring examples or photographs of past projects that reflect your abilities; though it is not necessary.
